I agree, start by driving safely even without the little ones in the car. There are genius new apps that send an auto-reply to any texts you receive when you're driving, that are designed to take the pressure off from looking at your phone and replying right away. And the ads are really true - no text is that essential that it can't wait. If you MUST look at a text (or even answer the phone), wait until you can make a complete stop. Try really imagining what would happen if you had a serious accident and injured or killed someone. Even if you didn't go to jail, you'd have a hard time living with that kind of guilt, especially if it was because you were putting on makeup in the car or something. Like so many other things, this is a bad habit that will take time to break but it will be worth it for so many reasons, only one of which is your niece and nephew being able to ride with you.
Sorry if this sounds lecture-y. I used to be the WORST driver, and am still far from the best, so I do understand where you're coming from.
